Because it didn't happen in Factions, I don't remember much about Prophecies release but I'm sure everything was reset other than names because it was the 1st chapter and everyone had to start at square one.

If you don't like it then stop playing and wait for Nightfall to be released officially.

Your analogy is working against you. The way it is, you try it, lose it - as if you ate and swallowed the piece of ham. Then you buy a whole ham, and start again. That's how this is.

The way you are describing is if they let you cut a piece off the ham and try it, then buy that ham, which isn't how supermarket sampling works.

Actually it is the same, the ham doesn't vomit out of your mouth, if you actually get what I mean by that. Although you could somehow remember the taste of the ham.

Same with the beta, your items "vomits" and gets deleted, and but you get to keep the memory.

First of all i didnt start the talk about the ham, and its not the best example.
What i meant was that, if you taste a ham piece at the supermarket. and lets say you buy a whole ham after that.. lets say the Ham piece is the character, and the whole ham is the game. Because of the bad example "ham" we have to take it like this. You taste/play the ham/character. (in this case they cant delete the ham piece from ur stumick, thats why its a bad example) and when you buy that whole ham/game you see the ham piece you tasted are gone from the whole ham.. You tasted it from the ham you buy.. Well im getting myself confused by this bad example, but i think i formed out my think.. And lets just skip the "ham-example"

Poison ivy - I dont think the supermarket guys will force you to vomit the ham piece, they just want you to buy the whole ham

Arena net force you to "vomit" the character, but still of course want you to buy nightfall.. i dont make it fall together!

I'm not sure what people are gaining besides unlocks in the Beta that simply must be kept?

Sigh move along... A.Net's choice to do this if you don't like it wait till October 27th to play the full game. Its not like A.Net needed to run a preview event to begin with. I played a bit of the preview event but after that I went back to my old characters to play PvP.

Other Companies does not equal A.Net if they did I will still be level 41 on my 1 character grinding my ass away so I can remain competitive with the people that don't have commitments etc.

I say its good that A.Net has provided this preview event as a taster of what is to come.

Regards

And stop whining and go do something useful like play GW

It really doesn't matter what others are doing, this is the way anet chooses to have their preview events and no amount of bitching is gonna change that, people have discussed this to death already since the first preview over a year ago and nothings really changed, so just accept it as a "eyeball only" event with the plus of being able to keep your unlocks. If you have seen enough and isn't interested in unlocking, then there is no reason to play the event further if you feel that its a waste of time since you don't keep anything. Just a thought.

Ok, I am going to try very hard to add to this thread and not bash, but quite frankly, even though the OP is entitled to his opinion, this thread is just moaning about something that has always been the same and will not change in the GW realm of gaming.

I actually 'stumbled' upon GW early last year, saw an ad for a 'free' gaming experience, had never heard of GW, didn't know what it was, had never heard of the forums for it, just downloaded something and played. I now realize it was one of the Free Preview events prior to release. I played a bit of the game, thought it was cool, got busy doing other stuff, other games and forgot about it until I saw a box on the shelf later that year.

Honestly, I cannot even remember if I knew the game I was buying was the same game that I had played earlier. Now I am thoroughly engaged in the GW experience and the amount of free content that I have been provided with over the last year and a half staggers me. I have been gaming on computers since you needed an external magnetic cassette deck to load and save games. Constantly and consistantly for 25 years, or thereabouts, bought and paid for games that have NEVER (I can use that word honestly) given me the amount of content that GW has given me. Free Previews of upcoming games, free holiday content, free explorable area updates, free patches (fixes and balances included), etc.

I cannot even recall, in 25 years, any single game that I have actually played continuosly for 3 or 4 months, never mind a year and a half. In my experience with gaming, the fact that I can preview, FREE, the amount of game material that I have seen between Factions and NightFall, just to help me decide wether or not to buy it, ASTOUNDS me. Paid Alpha testers do not get to claim and keep game content after the Alpha, Closed or Open, Paid or Free Beta Testers do not get to claim and keep game content after the Beta closes. What I hear the OP and others claiming, is that we should be 'rewarded' (by keeping cash, items, rank, fame, etc) for the PRIVELAGE of seeing and experiencing an amazing amount of game material and content that we have not paid for.

That we should be given an advantage in the game world over others who cannot or choose not to (so as not to spoil the surprises) play the preview events. Even in this 'Age of Entitlement'(anyone in customer service knows what I am talking about), this level of gall and unbridled selfishness appalls me. I have not EARNED the RIGHT to keep ANYTHING that I come across in this preview, I have been GRANTED, FREE OF CHARGE, the PRIVELAGE to view game content so that I can make an informed decision as to wether or not I wish to purchase this game or not.

This post will not change the minds of the 'entitled', nor is it intended to. Its just the view of one long time gamer who appreciates the time and effort of a dedicated group of other long time gamers in bringing me a great product and excellent customer benefits. Thank You ArenaNet.

Lol, it's a good post G.R.R. Martin, but if you break it into more paragraphs, more ppl might try to read the whole thing.

Here's this ONE POINT that everybody (most especially the OP) missed:

The primary objective of a Preview Event is NOT to let veterans have a look at GW Nightfall first hand. The primary objective is to let people who have not heard of this game or have not played to give it a go. That's why it's globally accessible.

So obviously, you can't keep all those items. Where the heck are they gonna find the storage space for holding potentially hundreds and thousands of new accounts that probably won't be used anymore?

Please don't start whining about something that's so minor. It's a preview, what'd you expect? When you go listen to some sample tracks at a music store, do you expect the store to burn you that small part of the CD that you listened to?

Fun?! *gasp*

We can't have that as a primary reason for playing!

As for me, I'm mixing it up by looking at the nice scenery and trying for a rather staid, but interesting SunSpear title.

Agreed. I started a few characters just to see the Dervish/Paragon's looks and skills, got up to the first city, and then stopped. I liked being able to check out the new general changes of menus and such, but I didn't want to spoil the content. I figure I'll be doing it 3-4 times when I start up Nightfall and I want it to be on a permanent basis when I put a character through then a temp, but I think the preview weekend was still a good thing.

This weekend seems to be for several reasons:]
To test for bugs/exploits
To see what players like and don't like(and what needs to be tweaked/nerfed)
To advertise to new players, as well as get old players hyped.

Remember skill>time played in anets mind. Why should one person get a head start when somebody else can't get on because of the server load(had this happen to a buddy of mine). Enjoy the view, the interesting new skins, etc. and live with the fact that its just a preview.

I hope everyone reads this post. You could learn something if you're one of those who consistantly thinks they're entitled to something from ANET.

So many of you seem to forget that we are given a TON of content for what little that we pay for the game. Yet all you people do is complain and complain.

Ok, what is wrong with you people.

My example is simply telling that Nightfall is a free sample, like the samples you get at the supermarket, the idea is to market, sell more copies of Nightfall.

You think Anet cares weather if you keep your characters or not? As long as it doesn't disturb the money rolling in, than: delete delete delete.

If you played Nightfall Beta and enjoyed it, but the Beta chars got deleted, would you refuse to buy Nightfall?

The whole damn point of GW is to feed mouths over at Anet, while siphoning money from us/retailers.

Read the introduce thread and i`ve written an opinion about that.

"You think Anet cares weather if you keep your characters or not?" - the question is, what point do they have by the work? make it good for us, the customers? - no
Just row in some cash? - dunno

how do they get cash? by us, customers.

And whats the most important that gives customers ? yeah, make it so good as possible for us!
they have to use their minds

I see mostly of the guys in here aint agree with me, i dunno why, well we cant expekt to much from a beta, but what do they lose if they aint ruin the characters? and what do we lose? yeah, the characters!

It`s like when your going to rent a new car for free that is out on the stores, but u cant buy it yet, only rent it for free, yeah like a GW beta.. You rent it for 1 day, you travel that 1 day with some stuffs back in the car, when ur back to leave the car they tell you to walk out the car, they take ur stuffs and burn it up! how nice is that huh? "OoOOh i still have the memory about the car, Wohoo....."

I don't agree with the OP, and his message title is provocative (could have been better) but what's up with the hostile comments? It's a beta test. Negative feedback is just as valuable, if not more so, than positive feedback. If it weren't for negative feedback, we'd not have the full merged content from merging Prophecies and Factions, for example. Or have a few things fixed which were long overdue.

It's not rocket science, people will not usually post about the things they are happy and content with - they'll tend to post about stuff which they may not like or may want improved (in their opinion).

You are not going to get pages and pages of compliments on forums because of this - if that's a problem for you, then perhaps you're better off not reading/responding to them.
